I don't have the answers yet, but I have learned enough to be dangerous, and ask better questions..
Questions About the Brangelina Baby
"Mom? What's the Brangelina baby?"
How should I answer? The truth?
What is the truth?
"Honey, the Brangelina baby is a child of two people who are mediocre actors, but who the American populace seems to think are gods. They cheated on Brad's wife, and then they pretended they weren't together, made a baby, and then took over an African nation to deliver it."
"Oh." Silence for a moment. "Well, why'd they take over an African nation?"
"They wanted to have a 'special' experience. African nations are full of starving people and sand, and you can stay in mundo nice resorts (if they have one) fairly cheap, so Brangelina just bought out a month at one. Then the government, realizing that this was likely to be their only substantial source of income for the entire year, did whatever Brangelina wanted. Brangelina said they didn't want people taking photos of them, though this is really their only claim to fame....being good looking and getting their photos taken a lot."
"Well, can we see the Brangelina baby?"
What is this thing, like a messiah for the 2000's? "No honey, no one can actually see it unless they pay $3.95 to People magazine. And People paid something like the equivalent of the GDP of the Cayman Islands to take the Brangelina baby's photo."
"Hmmm." A little silence, a new question forming. "....then why is the Brangelina Baby so important?"
See how quickly that got capitalized? See how fast humans are to deify something if they've got no inner divinity to refer to?
"Because people have nothing to satiate the emptiness of their own lives other than try to peer into the lives of really good looking people."
Thinking....
"Mommy, is the Brangelina Baby better than me?"
"No baby, and you shouldn't worry about it. In fact, it will hurt your eyes to spend too much time looking at it. Let's go for a walk in the park. Smell the flowers. See the ducks and water lillies. Listen to the dog flip-flapping and panting by your side.....
....and feel what it means to be alive."
