I don't have the answers yet, but I have learned enough to be dangerous, and ask better questions..
The Fog of War and poll results
I watched the Fog of War last night with my good friend Jim. I must say that, along with the Agronomist, it was possibly one of the best documentaries of all time. Jim felt it should be required viewing for kids in the pre-teen / teen age years, and I would like to agree, but I feel most kids are too shallow and uninformed (and uninterested in world affairs) to digest it with any resonance.
Youth - please challenge me on this. I'd love to be wrong....
I won't elaborate, since I have been chastised for undue blog verbosity, but I will say that the first and last lessons were incredibly salient from Fog of War.
1. Emphathize with the enemy.
11. You can't change human nature.
The first lesson referred specifically to the Cuban missile crisis, when the US, as McNamara put it, was looking straight down the barrel into nuclear war. He found out only years later that Castro was more than willing to sacrifice Cuba so that a strike on the US would be assured.
Think about that for a moment. A leader willing to watch his country be annihilated to ensure that the enemy goes down as well.
The last point is salient now. Who among us doesn't know that humans killing humans is wrong? Who among us doesn't know war is nothing but death? And yet, humans feel compelled to continue to mass murder each other in the name of (insert your cause here)???
Go see the film. It's on DVD now. You will find yourself surprised that he is discussing WWI, WWII, and Vietnam. It feels just like now, and Iraq. It's shocking to see how little anything has changed.
And now, for poll results.
Being disgusted with the media's polling results, where it looks like Bush will one by 1 point, I took one of my own. I sent an email to 31 well-informed friends, on both sides of the fence, some in "blue" states, some in "red" states, and asked what they are going to do.
The results:
For Kerry: 7
For Bush: 1
Undecided / Apathetic / Can't be bothered / Who's running again? / Don't give a damn: 24
And there you have it....
